Itinerary

You arrive at Marrakech airport, a driver meets you and helps with luggage, you go to your riad or hotel in the old city, you take time to rest after the flight, in the late afternoon you walk to Jemaa el Fnaa square, you feel the lively market, you see food stalls, musicians and storytellers, you taste simple street food like orange juice and fresh pastries, you return to the riad and rest, this first day is for settling in and getting a first feeling of Morocco.

    A local English speaking guide meets you after breakfast, you walk the medina and see the main sites, you visit Bahia Palace and Koutoubia from outside, you walk through the souks and learn about spices, carpets and local crafts, you stop for mint tea in a small cafe, in the afternoon you visit Jardin Majorelle or a museum if you prefer, the guide explains history and daily life, in the evening you can try a small traditional restaurant and rest at the riad.

      Today you drive to Ourika valley in the foothills of the High Atlas, you see the river and small Berber villages by the road, you walk a short trail near the water, you stop for lunch in a simple guesthouse with local food, you may visit a local family for tea and fresh bread, you enjoy mountain views and cooler air, you return to Marrakech late and have dinner, this day gives a calm contrast to the busy city.

          You leave early and cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n Tichka mountain pass, the road climbs and gives wide views of valleys and small villages, the pass reaches above two thousand meters and the scenery is dramatic, you stop for photos and tea, you visit the fortified ksar of Ait Benhaddou on the way, you arrive Ouarzazate in the evening and check in, this travel day shows the change from green mountains to dry desert plains.

                You leave the Dades and continue east across desert plains, you pass small towns and palm groves, the road brings you close to the large dunes of Merzouga, you check in to your hotel in Merzouga and rest, you prepare for the desert excursion the next day, this day is longer on the road but with many photo stops.

                  In the morning you drive to the dunes, you ride camels into the sand for a slow journey to the camp, you stop on the dune for a picnic lunch or to share lunch with a local Berber family if possible, you watch the sunset over the high sand, you have a simple dinner at the camp with music and a quiet night under the stars, the Erg Chebbi dunes here can rise very high and the sand shapes are spectacular.
